GPA calculator

TL;DR: your GPA is your total grade points divided by your total credits. Enter your courses below to get both your unweighted GPA (standard 4.0 scale) and your weighted GPA (with honors and AP bonuses).

Weighting and earlier GPA (optional)

Schools set their own bonus. Honors is often +0.5 and AP or IB often +1.0, but check your school's policy. The bonus is only added to passing grades.

How GPA is calculated

GPA stands for grade point average. Each course grade becomes grade points, the points are multiplied by the course credits, and the total is divided by the total credits.

Formula: GPA = (sum of grade points × credits) ÷ (sum of credits)

Letter gradeGrade points
A+ / A4.0
A-3.7
B+3.3
B3.0
B-2.7
C+2.3
C2.0
C-1.7
D+ / D / D-1.3 / 1.0 / 0.7
F0.0

This is the common 4.0 scale. Your school may use a different one, so use its published scale if it has one.

Worked example

A student takes four 1-credit courses: English (A), Algebra 2 (B+), AP Biology (B) and History (A-).

  • Unweighted: (4.0 + 3.3 + 3.0 + 3.7) ÷ 4 = 14.0 ÷ 4 = 3.50
  • Weighted with +1.0 for AP Biology: (4.0 + 3.3 + 4.0 + 3.7) ÷ 4 = 15.0 ÷ 4 = 3.75

GPA calculator FAQs

How do I calculate my GPA?

Convert each letter grade to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0), multiply each by the course credits, add them up, then divide by your total credits. For example, an A in a 1-credit course and a B in a 1-credit course gives (4.0 + 3.0) ÷ 2 = 3.5.

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

An unweighted GPA uses the standard 4.0 scale and treats every course the same. A weighted GPA adds a bonus, often +0.5 for honors and +1.0 for AP or IB, so harder courses can raise a GPA above 4.0. Schools choose their own weights.

Do plus and minus grades change my GPA?

At many schools they do: an A- is usually 3.7 and a B+ is usually 3.3. Some schools ignore plus and minus and give a flat 4.0 for any A. Check your school's grading policy and use the grade scale it publishes.

What is a good GPA?

On the 4.0 scale, 3.0 is a B average, 3.5 is between B+ and A-, and 4.0 is straight As. What counts as good depends on the school or programme you are aiming for, so look at the typical GPA that colleges publish for admitted students.

Can I calculate my GPA if I already have a GPA from earlier terms?

Yes. Open the weighting section and enter your earlier GPA and the credits it covers. The calculator combines them with this term by multiplying the earlier GPA by its credits and adding the new grade points.

Is this the same as a UK grade or percentage?

No. GPA is a US system. UK GCSE and A-Level results use letter or number grades and are not converted with this calculator. Universities that convert between systems publish their own tables.
